Poinsett Street Freedman's Cottage
Charleston, SC

About This Project
Historic renovation of a rare Freedman's Cottage, preserving an important piece of Charleston's post-Civil War history. These cottages were built by and for formerly enslaved people during Reconstruction, representing self-determination and community building in the face of adversity.
Historical Significance
Freedman's Cottages are significant examples of vernacular architecture from the Reconstruction era (1865-1877). Built by freed African Americans, these modest homes symbolized independence and home ownership - fundamental aspirations denied during slavery. This particular cottage on Poinsett Street stands as a testament to Charleston's African American heritage and the resilience of the Freedman community.
